🕯️ Candle Care 101: How to Look After Your Custom Wicks Candle

There’s something truly special about lighting a candle that’s been made just for you. Whether it’s a gift from a loved one or a little treat to yourself, we want you to enjoy every moment of your Custom Wicks candle.

To help you get the most out of your candle – from the very first light to the last – we’ve put together a simple guide to candle care. Just a few small steps will keep your candle burning cleaner, longer, and more beautifully.

 

✂️ 1. Trim the Wick Before Each Burn

Before lighting your candle, always trim the wick to around 5mm (¼ inch). This helps prevent soot, stops the flame from getting too big, and ensures a longer, more even burn. You can use wick trimmers or even nail scissors if you don’t have one to hand.

🕯️ 2. Let It Burn Long Enough the First Tim

The first time you light your candle, let it burn for 2–3 hours – or until the wax melts evenly across the top. This sets the “memory” of the wax and helps prevent tunnelling (when wax builds up around the edges and the centre burns straight down).

🌬️ 3. Avoid Draughts

Try to keep your candle away from open windows, fans, or draughty spots. A flickering flame can burn unevenly, reduce the candle’s life, and even create soot around the glass.

⏳ 4. Don’t Burn for Too Long

We recommend burning your candle for no more than 4 hours at a time. After that, let the wax cool completely before relighting. This protects the wick and keeps your candle performing at its best.

🔥 5. Burn Safely

Always place your candle on a heatproof surface, out of reach of children and pets. Never leave a lit candle unattended – as tempting as it is to walk off mid-moment!

✨ 6. Stop Burning When 10mm of Wax Remains

It’s best to stop burning your candle once about 10mm of wax is left at the bottom. This helps prevent the jar from overheating and keeps things safe.
